From question to visit
What getting care involves
Describe the concern first. Then ask how the visit, the treatment decision and any follow-up will work.
A visit at home or in a room
Start by describing the problem you want help with. The conversation can then focus on a treatment goal rather than a product list.
Ohio lets a clinician require an in-person visit instead of telehealth, as of September 28, 2026. Ohio on visit format
- For a remote visit, ask how to exchange records and questions.
- At a visit in person, ask who will carry out your assessment.
- For either format, bring the same questions about the medicine and cost.
Expect a treatment decision, not just a menu
For online prescribing, Ohio requires a health assessment, a diagnosis of the problem and a treatment plan (checked September 28, 2026). Ohio’s assessment rule
The Federation of State Medical Boards advises state medical boards as a national group. Under its guidance, a clinician must assess the patient before prescribing; picking a medicine from a list alone does not suffice (checked September 26, 2026). Read the national group’s guidance
That group gives advice rather than making Ohio’s rules. In Ohio, the clinician must assess your health problem and plan your care before prescribing.
- Describe your goal in your own words.
- List the medicines and supplements you already use.
- Bring past records or test results that you want to discuss.
Tests and an examination depend on the concern
Medical-board guidance checked September 17, 2026, requires your clinician to arrange tests your health problem needs or refer you to someone able to arrange them. Read the assessment guidance
- Ask what each proposed test will help answer.
- Ask whether its price is part of the visit fee.
- Ask who will explain the results.
Know what happens after the visit
Ohio’s online-care rule says the clinician must provide follow-up care or recommend where to get it (as of September 28, 2026). You can also ask for your visit record, and the clinician must make it available. Ohio on follow-up and records
- Ask who handles questions after medicine arrives.
- Ask how to obtain the visit note.
- Ask when the plan will be reviewed.
- Ask for the pharmacy’s name before a prescription is filled.
